Project «Clean Irchelpark» (2019)

Initial situation 2018:
Irchelpark is the daily commute for several thousand students and employees. As one of the largest newer parks in Switzerland, it surrounds the Irchel Campus, one of the main locations of the UZH. In addition, the many UZH employees and students as well as the population from especially the adjacent neighborhoods use the park for recreation.
In 2018, there is regular large-scale littering, e.g. on the lawn by the lake, and vandalism. The greatest littering occurs in summer when the weather is nice, especially from Friday to Saturday.
At the learning center Irchel, pizza boxes are often deposited on the waste containers instead of being disposed of in the container, and then blown away by the wind.
Aims:
Reduction of picnic littering through
- Investigate the psychological mechanisms of litter avoidance behavior
- Evaluation of existing afforandances for correct waste disposal
- Testing the thesis of the existing afforandence for sustainable waste separation (paper and cartoon) at the learning center Irchel
Procedure:
- Master's thesis and research internships:
- Multilevel intervention study with six differently designed posters to investigate the psychological mechanisms behind littering behavior in Irchelpark
- Survey of 773 park visitors on 119 days
- Survey from May to September 2019, about how much litter was not disposed of properly and how much litter was disposed of overall
- Test a structural measure for waste separation: separate containers to separate cardboard vs. trash. AV: amount of waste and degree of purity of waste separation
- Recording of the subjective assessment of littering per cleaning location and the number of emptied waste containers per cleaning round by the cleaning team
Results:
Final report Clean Irchelpark (PDF, 1 MB)
Structural improvement measures:
- From early summer to autumn, two new waste containers will be installed in addition.
- The wood-clad year-round waste containers have been re-labeled.
- The responsibility for park cleaning has been reorganized: from 2020, this will no longer be carried out by the gardening department but by the special cleaning and services teams of the Irchel operating service.
